Suzanne Edminster is best known for her large acrylic “contemporary primitive” abstractions, often in bright colors and inspired by ancient art and myth. “I like to take archaic ideas and make them post-modern,” she has said. “I use twenty-first century pigments and colors; we don’t need to paint like the old masters.” With her emphasis on multiple fluorescent surface layers, broken metal leaf, narrative animal forms, and calligraphic marks, her work has been described as magical, Chagall-like, modern cave painting.

Primarily self-taught, Suzanne holds an M.A. in Poetics, and studied with beat poets Diane di Prima and David Meltzer. “Intuitive abstraction is the poetry of painting,” she said. “It all rises from the same source.” A native Californian, she has lived in Europe and South India, where her emphasis on bright, uninhibited colors developed. She paints and teaches in Saltworkstudio in the SOFA Arts District of Santa Rosa, California. You can read her blog on creativity, or join her on Instagram @Saltworkstudio.
